CAR PARKS AND ROAD CLOSURE

The South and East Car Parks and the access road between the two car parks will be closed on Wednesday 16 May 2012 from 7.00am until 4.00pm to allow for the delivery of a large item of equipment. Cars will need to be removed from these areas before this time as once the road is closed it will not be possible to reopen it. As this will considerably reduce the amount of parking, please consider other forms of transport if you are travelling to the College on that day. Thank you for your understanding. Barry Coote, Home Bursar

CURRENT STUDENTS - COME & JOIN THE WOLFSON TELETHON CAMPAIGN, 16 JUNE - 1 JULY 2012

We’ve put posters up around College, and had a great response so far, but we still want more callers for our summer Telethon! The pros are many: pay at £8 per hour, for c.23 hours per week, for two weeks means that this is a really good earner (and there will be opportunities for more hours for those who can do them!) Evening calling during the week means that many of your daytime hours will be free for all your other commitments. We’ll be calling after the end of term in 9th and 10th week (a good time to replenish your finances after 8th week celebrations). To top it all off, we will make sure that you have plenty of fun – impressive fundraising will be rewarded with prizes! So, if you are enthusiastic about your College, and would like to communicate what’s happening here to our Alumni, please go online to fill out the application at http://fs16.formsite.com/ruxburtonassociates/Wolfson2012/ or get in touch with Anna Johnson in the Development Office on development.office@wolfson.ox.ac.uk or on 01865 611041. We will be holding interviews on the 21st and 22nd of May – these will not be scary - we just want to put together a really good group!

WOLFSON DONATIONS TO AMREF

We have now received a letter from Samara Hammond, Chief Executive at AMREF UK, thanking the College for its recent donation and sending us a short case study of a young girl who suffered from fistula and was operated on by an AMREF outreach surgeon. This illustrates how important the issue is and how Wolfson’s donation can help. These are now posted on the Lodge noticeboard. AMREF Group

PERSONAL SAFETY REMINDER AND THE OUSU SAFETY BUS SCHEME

Although not wishing to alarm anyone, it bears repeating that like any other large city, Oxford has its proportion of crime. It is strongly recommended that individuals do not walk alone after dark in Oxford, including the city centre. OUSU members (http://www.ousu.org/) who find themselves out late at night may wish to make use of the OUSU Safety Bus Scheme which was set up to provide a safe and affordable means of transport. To use the service, simply ring 0771 4445050 between 9am and 3am Monday-Saturday; 9am to 1am on Sunday. The bus will pick you up and deliver you to any destination within the ring road for £1 per trip. Priority will always be given to lone and/or vulnerable individuals (http://www.ousu.org/welfare/o/?searchterm=safety%20bus). Academic Administrator

JOB OPPORTUNITY: JUNIOR DEAN, ST CATHERINE’S COLLEGE (DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY 23 MAY)

St Catherine’s College intends to appoint a Junior Dean with effect from 1 October 2012 for one year, which may be renewed. The deadline to apply is noon on Wednesday 23 May. For more information, visit http://www.stcatz.ox.ac.uk/vacancies/junior-dean. Academic Administrator

IMPORTANT REMINDER TO GRADUATES ON TAUGHT COURSES: DEADLINES ARE DEADLINES!

We cannot stress enough the importance of meeting any and all deadlines for the submission of written work on time. In an address to Congregation in March, the University’s Proctors noted the recent sharp increase in the number of unauthorised late submissions from taught masters students. Candidates should be aware that, unless there are medical or other serious reasons for the late submission, the examiners are given permission to impose academic penalties in addition to the administrative fee that is almost invariably levied. Students finding themselves in such a position should contact the College’s Academic Office immediately and without delay – ideally before the published deadline so that evidence in mitigation may be submitted to the Proctors. For more information, consult the Examination Regulations (big grey book or online at http://www.ox.ac.uk/students/exams/) or Section 2: Academic Life at Wolfson in the College Student Handbook (http://www.wolfson.ox.ac.uk/internal/students).
